Many cats and dogs are relinquished daily to animal shelters when their owners
enter a nursing home or die. Pet owners, believing that relatives will adopt their
pets, may never know that relatives are unable to keep the pet when push comes to
shove. Pets are instead turned over to an animal shelter where their future will be
based upon the shelter's assessment of the pet's adopt ability.
Please consider creating a MO pet trust to ensure that your pets are cared for
appropriately when you are no longer able to care for them. Under MO law, a pet
owner can set aside funds for the care of the owner's pets and name a specific
person as the pet's guardian. The pet is then cared for in the manner the owner
outlines in this legal document.
